UpdraftCentral Keys Stolen in Breach, Potentially Exposing Thousands of WordPress Sites
Security researchers have confirmed that a hacker group infiltrated the website of TeamUpdraft, the company behind the widely used UpdraftPlus backup plugin and its companion UpdraftCentral management tool. The intrusion appears to have granted the attackers access to UpdraftCentral connection keys, which can be used to issue commands to any WordPress site linked to the compromised accounts.
UpdraftCentral allows administrators to control multiple WordPress installations from a single dashboard, streamlining updates, backups, and security scans. The connection keys act as authentication tokens, enabling the central console to communicate with each site without requiring repeated logins. If those keys are harvested, a malicious actor could theoretically push malicious code, alter configurations, or retrieve sensitive data across a network of sites that rely on the service.
TeamUpdraft discovered the breach after noticing abnormal traffic patterns on its server and subsequently notified affected users. While the company has not disclosed the exact number of compromised keys, industry analysts estimate that the potential impact could extend to tens of thousands of WordPress sites, given the plugin’s popularity—UpdraftPlus reports millions of active installations worldwide. The firm has revoked the exposed keys and urged administrators to generate new ones, as well as to audit recent activity on their sites for any unauthorized changes.
The episode underscores a broader trend of supply‑chain attacks targeting plugins that serve as infrastructure for WordPress, the world’s most common content‑management system. Over the past year, several high‑profile incidents have shown how attackers can leverage trusted extensions to gain footholds in otherwise secure environments. Security experts recommend that site owners keep plugins up to date, employ multi‑factor authentication, and limit the privileges of any external management tools.
Looking ahead, TeamUpdraft says it is conducting a full forensic review and will implement additional hardening measures, including stricter key generation processes and enhanced monitoring of API usage. The incident also raises questions for the WordPress ecosystem about how third‑party services handle authentication tokens and what standards might be needed to protect them. Users are advised to stay vigilant, apply any patches released by the plugin developer promptly, and consider regular key rotation as part of their routine security hygiene.
