Operation Serengeti III Yields Over 1,400 Cybercriminal Arrests and $105 Million Recovered Across 21 Nations

INTERPOL released the final tally of its latest cybercrime sweep, Operation Serengeti III, reporting that law‑enforcement agencies in 21 countries arrested 1,462 individuals, dismantled 10,909 illicit online networks and seized assets worth roughly $105 million.

The three‑year‑long initiative builds on earlier Serengeti phases that targeted transnational hacking groups, ransomware operators and money‑laundering schemes. By pooling investigative resources, forensic expertise and legal tools, the partnership aimed to strike at the infrastructure that enables large‑scale digital theft.

Authorities say the arrests spanned a range of illicit activities, from ransomware extortion and phishing campaigns to sophisticated financial fraud schemes that moved money through cryptocurrency mixers. Joint raids were coordinated across Europe, Asia and Africa, with local police executing search warrants, confiscating servers and seizing computers used to coordinate attacks.

Financial recovery was a central goal of the operation. Seized cash, cryptocurrency wallets and proceeds from fraudulent transactions were frozen and are being returned to victims where possible. INTERPOL highlighted the $105 million haul as a benchmark for future asset‑recovery efforts, noting that the funds will be channeled through national courts to ensure proper restitution.

Disrupting more than ten thousand malicious networks is expected to have a cascading effect on the cybercriminal ecosystem. By taking down command‑and‑control servers and cutting off payment channels, investigators hope to raise the cost of launching large‑scale attacks and deter would‑be offenders.

In a statement, INTERPOL officials emphasized that the success of Serengeti III underscores the importance of cross‑border collaboration. They urged nations that have not yet joined the effort to adopt common legal frameworks and share intelligence, arguing that cyber threats do not respect geographic boundaries.

Looking ahead, INTERPOL said it will use the lessons learned from Serengeti III to shape its next coordinated operation, focusing on emerging threats such as deep‑fake fraud and supply‑chain compromises. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to supporting member states with training, technical assistance and rapid‑response teams to keep pace with evolving digital crime tactics.
