Nigerian Cybercriminal Sentenced to Eight Years for Multi‑Year U.S. Tax‑Fraud Scheme

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., handed down an eight‑year prison term on Monday to Chukwuemeka Victor Amachukwu, a 40‑year‑old Nigerian citizen, after the U.S. Justice Department secured a conviction for a multi‑year hacking and tax‑fraud operation.

Prosecutors allege that between 2019 and 2023 Amachukwu and a small group of accomplices penetrated U.S. tax‑related databases, exfiltrated taxpayer data and used that information to file fraudulent returns and to lure investors into sham investment opportunities that promised outsized returns.

The investigation was led by the DOJ’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section in coordination with the IRS Criminal Investigation division and several federal law‑enforcement partners. Digital forensics traced the intrusion to specific IP addresses, linked the stolen data to a series of wire transfers, and ultimately tied the money flow to accounts under Amachukwu’s control.

Authorities say the scheme generated several hundred thousand dollars in illicit proceeds, a portion of which was recovered through asset forfeiture. Victims included individual taxpayers whose refunds were intercepted and investors who lost capital after being convinced to fund nonexistent projects.

The case arrives amid a sharp rise in cyber‑enabled tax fraud, a trend that intensified after the pandemic as criminals exploit remote filing systems. Legal analysts note that the eight‑year sentence signals a tough stance by U.S. prosecutors on cross‑border cyber crime, and they anticipate continued international cooperation to deter similar schemes in the future.
