Microsoft acknowledges USB audio failures after September 2026 Windows updates

Microsoft has confirmed that the September 2026 security patches identified as KB5124008 and KB5124012 can cause USB‑connected audio devices to stop functioning on certain Windows PCs.

The issue was first reported by security‑focused website BleepingComputer, which observed that users experienced loss of sound output after the updates were applied. Microsoft’s support pages now list the problem among known update side effects and advise affected customers on possible work‑arounds.

Both KB5124008 and KB5124012 are part of Microsoft’s regular monthly “Patch Tuesday” rollout, aimed at addressing vulnerabilities in the operating system. The patches include fixes for several critical exploits, but the unintended interaction with USB audio drivers appears to stem from changes to the Windows audio stack that were not fully compatible with some third‑party hardware.

According to Microsoft, the malfunction is limited to specific configurations, primarily involving older USB sound cards and certain headset models that rely on generic drivers. Users have reported that the devices become invisible in the Sound settings, and attempts to reinstall drivers do not restore functionality until the updates are removed.

Microsoft recommends three immediate steps for users experiencing the problem: revert the two September updates via the Settings → Update & Security → View update history → Uninstall updates option; disconnect and reconnect the USB audio device; and, if needed, install the latest driver from the hardware manufacturer. The company also states that a corrective update is being tested and will be released in the next patch cycle.
