Microsoft Acknowledges Remote Desktop Glitch Linked to Latest Windows Updates
Microsoft has confirmed that a subset of recent Windows updates can prevent standard users from establishing Remote Desktop connections when the "Administrator protection" security setting is active, potentially disrupting routine remote access in many environments.
The issue stems from the interaction between the new updates and the Administrator protection feature, which is designed to limit the ability of non‑privileged accounts to elevate privileges or modify critical system settings. When this safeguard is turned on, the updated Remote Desktop client may incorrectly block connection attempts from accounts without administrative rights.
IT administrators report that the problem primarily affects non‑admin users who rely on Remote Desktop for tasks such as remote support, development work, or accessing virtual machines. Enterprises that enforce strict least‑privilege policies are especially vulnerable, as the default configuration often leaves the protection feature enabled to comply with security standards.
Microsoft’s response includes a recommendation to temporarily disable Administrator protection on affected machines or to revert the problematic updates until a remedial patch is released. The company also advises administrators to monitor the Windows Update catalog for forthcoming fixes and to test any changes in a controlled environment before wide deployment.
Remote Desktop remains a cornerstone of Windows‑based remote work and management, and similar compatibility glitches have surfaced in past update cycles, prompting concerns about the balance between security hardening and operational continuity. The current flaw underscores the challenges of rolling out broad security enhancements without unintended side effects.
Looking ahead, Microsoft says a corrective update is in development and will be rolled out through regular Windows Update channels in the coming weeks. In the interim, administrators are urged to assess the necessity of Administrator protection for each device, apply the suggested workarounds, and stay alert for official patch notes to restore full Remote Desktop functionality for all user tiers.
