Microsoft Makes Windows Settings Backup Default for Entra‑Joined Enterprise Devices

Microsoft has announced that the backup and restore feature for Windows settings will now be turned on automatically for any corporate device that is joined to Microsoft Entra or operates in a hybrid Entra configuration, provided the machine runs the Windows 11 26H2 update. The change removes the need for IT administrators to manually enable the service, streamlining the protection of user preferences, personalization options and security configurations across the organization.

The shift applies to all enterprise PCs that have been upgraded to the latest Windows 11 release, known as version 26H2. Previously, the backup functionality—part of the broader Windows Configuration Service—required explicit activation through group policy or manual user action. By making it the default setting, Microsoft aims to reduce the risk of configuration loss when devices are refreshed, replaced, or experience hardware failures, a common scenario in large‑scale deployments.

Microsoft Entra, the company’s identity and access management platform, serves as the backbone for the new default behavior. Devices that are Entra‑joined or hybrid‑joined are already authenticated against Azure AD, allowing the operating system to securely sync settings to the cloud without additional user intervention. This integration leverages existing cloud infrastructure, meaning enterprises do not need to provision separate backup solutions for desktop configurations.

Industry analysts note that the move aligns with a broader trend toward cloud‑first management of endpoint settings. As organizations continue to adopt Windows 11 and migrate workloads to Azure, having a built‑in, always‑on backup reduces administrative overhead and improves business continuity. It also supports compliance initiatives that require documented recovery procedures for user environments, especially in regulated sectors such as finance and healthcare.

Looking ahead, Microsoft has indicated that the feature will be extensible through policy controls, allowing companies to fine‑tune which categories of settings are stored and for how long. The company has not disclosed a timeline for additional enhancements, but the default enablement sets a precedent for further automation of endpoint management tasks. Administrators are encouraged to review the new behavior in their deployment plans and verify that existing data protection policies align with the automatic backup process.
