Maritime Coalition Unveils Open Database Cataloguing Thousands of Ship and Port Cyber Risks

The Maritime Coalition announced today the release of a free, publicly accessible vulnerability database aimed at strengthening the cybersecurity posture of vessels and port facilities worldwide. The new resource is positioned as a central repository where operators can locate known weaknesses in the software and hardware that control navigation, cargo handling, and other critical maritime functions.

Compiled by the Blue Initiative, the database currently lists close to 30,000 information‑technology (IT) and operational‑technology (OT) vulnerabilities that could affect maritime environments. Among these, 37 entries pertain to products that are uniquely used in shipboard or port‑side applications, highlighting gaps that have previously received limited attention.

Cyber threats to the shipping industry have risen sharply over the past decade as vessels adopt more interconnected systems for everything from engine monitoring to crew communications. High‑profile incidents, such as ransomware attacks on container terminals and unauthorized access to ship navigation software, have underscored the sector’s growing exposure to digital risk.

By making vulnerability data openly available, the coalition hopes to lower the barrier for smaller operators that lack dedicated security teams. Port authorities, ship owners, and equipment manufacturers can use the database to prioritize patches, assess the relevance of each flaw to their fleets, and align remediation efforts with industry best practices.

The initiative is not a static list; contributors have pledged to update the catalog as new findings emerge. Ongoing collaboration with cybersecurity researchers, classification societies, and regulatory bodies is intended to foster a shared understanding of threat landscapes and to support the development of maritime‑specific security standards.

Industry analysts view the launch as a step toward greater transparency and collective defense in a sector that has traditionally guarded its technical details. If widely adopted, the database could become a reference point for compliance audits, insurance assessments, and future policy frameworks aimed at safeguarding global supply chains from cyber disruption.
