India to Require Caller Name Display on 4G+ Networks from Nov. 1
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued a directive that all telecom operators in India must show the registered name of a caller alongside the phone number for inbound calls on 4G and newer networks, beginning 1 November 2026.
Under the new rule, when a call is received on a mobile device, the handset will display both the subscriber’s name, as recorded in the telecom provider’s database, and the telephone number. The measure is aimed at reducing the prevalence of unsolicited and fraudulent calls, which have surged in recent years and often rely on anonymity to deceive recipients.
Regulators say the policy builds on earlier efforts to curb spam and scam calls, such as mandatory “Do Not Disturb” registries and the rollout of AI‑driven call‑screening tools. By pairing a number with a verified name, the government hopes to give users a clearer context for deciding whether to answer, thereby lowering the success rate of impersonation scams that exploit unknown caller IDs.
Telecom service providers have been given a three‑month window to update their network infrastructure and customer‑relationship management systems to support the feature. The Ministry has indicated that compliance will be monitored through periodic audits, and non‑compliant operators could face penalties, though the exact enforcement mechanisms have not been detailed.
Consumer groups have welcomed the move, noting that many Indians receive dozens of spam calls each week and often lack reliable means to differentiate legitimate contacts from malicious ones. However, privacy advocates caution that the requirement could raise concerns about data accuracy and the handling of personal information, urging regulators to ensure robust safeguards against misuse.
Industry analysts predict that the rollout may also influence market dynamics, as operators that swiftly implement the feature could gain a competitive edge by offering a more secure calling experience. The policy’s impact will likely be monitored closely, with the possibility of extending similar name‑display requirements to older 3G networks or to VoIP services if the initial phase proves effective.
