FBI Nabs Additional Alleged ShinyHunters Member Tied to Federal Jobs Portal Breach

The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced on Oct. 9 that it has taken another individual into custody on suspicion of collaborating with the ShinyHunters extortion group, which claimed responsibility for a recent intrusion into the agency's employment‑applications website.

ShinyHunters, a loosely organized collective known for publicizing data thefts and demanding payment to prevent disclosure, said in September that it had penetrated the FBI's jobs portal and extracted sensitive information belonging to a large portion of applicants. The group posted excerpts of the stolen data online, threatening to release the full set unless its demands were met.

According to a brief statement posted by FBI Director Kash Patel on the social‑media platform X, the newly arrested suspect is believed to have played a role in the technical phases of the breach. While the agency has not released the individual's identity or specific charges, it indicated that the arrest follows a multi‑agency investigation that also involved the Department of Justice and cyber‑crime specialists from other federal entities.

Officials emphasized that the compromised data could include personal identifiers, résumés, and background‑check materials submitted by job seekers. Although the FBI has not confirmed the extent of the exposure, the agency warned that any misuse of the information could pose identity‑theft risks and undermine confidence in its recruitment processes.

The latest arrest comes after earlier detentions of alleged ShinyHunters participants earlier this year, signaling a broader effort to dismantle the group’s operations. Cybersecurity experts note that ShinyHunters has targeted a range of organizations, from private firms to government agencies, leveraging stolen data for extortion. The FBI’s ongoing probe aims to trace additional participants, secure affected systems, and reinforce safeguards across federal networks to prevent similar incidents in the future.
