Co‑founder of Empire Market Sentenced to 40 Years, Ordered to Relinquish $100 Million in Crypto

Federal judges handed a 40‑year prison term to Raheim Hamilton, a 30‑year‑old who helped launch the Empire Market dark‑web marketplace, marking one of the longest sentences for a crypto‑based drug operation.

Empire Market, which rose to prominence in 2018, operated as a hidden online platform where users bought and sold illegal narcotics using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Monero. At its height, the site was believed to facilitate millions of dollars in illicit trade before being shut down by law‑enforcement agencies in 2021.

Earlier this year, Hamilton entered a guilty plea to a conspiracy charge tied to the distribution of controlled substances. As part of the plea agreement, he consented to forfeit more than $100 million in Bitcoin and several Virginia properties that investigators linked to the marketplace’s revenue streams.

The case was built on a multi‑agency effort that combined traditional investigative techniques with sophisticated blockchain analysis. Authorities tracked cryptocurrency transactions across a web of wallets, ultimately tracing a substantial portion of the marketplace’s profits back to Hamilton’s accounts.

Legal experts say the sentence underscores a growing willingness among prosecutors to pursue harsh penalties for operators of illicit crypto platforms. The forfeiture order also reflects an increasing focus on dismantling the financial infrastructure that enables dark‑web trade.

While Hamilton’s legal team has indicated they will consider an appeal, the verdict sends a clear signal to other anonymous online entrepreneurs that the anonymity offered by cryptocurrencies does not guarantee immunity from criminal prosecution. The outcome may also encourage further international cooperation in tracking and seizing digital assets tied to illegal activity.
