Cisco Rushes Out Patches for Zero-Day Firewall Vulnerability Under Active Attack
Cisco has released urgent security patches to address a critical zero-day vulnerability affecting its flagship enterprise firewall appliances. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-20349, is reportedly being actively exploited in the wild, posing an immediate threat to organizations relying on these systems for perimeter defense.
The vulnerability impacts Cisco Secure Firewall Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) and Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) software. Security analysts warn that the vulnerability is particularly dangerous because it can be exploited remotely without requiring any user authentication. This allows attackers to target internet-facing firewalls directly without needing compromised credentials.
Successful exploitation of CVE-2026-20349 enables attackers to launch Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. By sending specially crafted traffic to an affected device, malicious actors can force the system to reboot or shut down completely. Because these firewalls act as the primary gateway for corporate networks, a successful attack can disrupt internet connectivity and paralyze internal business operations.
The disclosure highlights an ongoing trend where cybercriminals heavily target network edge devices. Because firewalls and gateways sit directly on the boundary between internal networks and the public internet, they are highly valuable targets.
