UK to Launch National Center Targeting State‑Sponsored Disinformation, PM Announces at UN

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham used his speech at the United Nations General Assembly to unveil a plan for a new national centre that will detect, attribute and disrupt hostile state‑run disinformation targeting the United Kingdom.

The centre will operate as a joint hub, pooling resources from the intelligence community, the National Cyber Security Centre, media regulators, academic researchers and major technology platforms to share threat data and coordinate rapid responses.

Officials said the move responds to a surge in coordinated propaganda campaigns originating from authoritarian governments, which have increasingly exploited social media to sow doubt, influence public opinion and undermine confidence in democratic institutions.

While existing bodies such as the NCSC and Ofcom have monitored online threats, they lack a singular mandate focused on foreign‑state disinformation. The new entity is intended to fill that gap by providing a dedicated analytical and operational capability.

According to the announcement, the centre will employ real‑time monitoring tools, forensic attribution techniques and a legal framework that enables swift removal of false content, public advisories and, where appropriate, coordinated sanctions against hostile actors.

The initiative mirrors similar efforts in the United States, the European Union and several NATO allies, reflecting a broader consensus that democratic societies must develop collective defenses against information warfare.

Burnham indicated that the government will allocate funding in the upcoming fiscal year and expects the centre to become operational within twelve months. Parliament will be asked to endorse the necessary legislation, and the UK will seek close collaboration with allied disinformation‑countering units.

Critics caution that any state‑run counter‑disinformation programme must balance security objectives with freedom of expression, urging transparent oversight and clear safeguards against overreach. The government has promised an independent review board to monitor the centre’s activities and ensure compliance with UK law and human‑rights standards.
