Rapid AI Agent Rollout Outpaces Governance, Splunk Warns of Growing Security Gaps

Splunk's latest research highlights a widening gap between the swift deployment of autonomous AI agents in enterprises and the ability of existing oversight frameworks to keep up, sparking concerns over potential security and compliance lapses.

Agentic AI—software that can act independently based on large‑language‑model insights—has moved from experimental labs into daily business processes. Companies are using these agents to automate tasks such as data analysis, customer support routing, and even code generation, promising faster decision‑making and cost reductions.

The study notes that the promised benefits are real: organizations report higher productivity and the ability to scale complex workflows without proportionally expanding staff. However, the same autonomy that fuels efficiency can also generate hidden activity, making it difficult for IT teams to trace which actions were performed by a human and which originated from an AI.

Oversight tools that were built for traditional software struggle to monitor the dynamic behavior of self‑directing agents. Splunk found that many security platforms lack the visibility needed to log AI‑driven decisions, leaving blind spots that could be exploited by malicious actors or result in accidental policy violations.

These visibility gaps raise concrete risks. Unchecked AI actions could inadvertently expose sensitive data, bypass access controls, or trigger unintended integrations with third‑party services. For regulated sectors, such lapses may translate into compliance breaches and costly penalties.

Experts advise that organizations treat AI agents as a distinct class of assets, establishing dedicated governance policies, continuous monitoring, and clear accountability structures. Industry groups are also beginning to draft standards that address AI‑specific audit trails and risk assessments, aiming to bring oversight capabilities in line with the pace of adoption.
